5 things to avoid doing in your next interview

Knowing what to say and what not to say is an important part of being able to interview well and is vital in ensuring that you are able to present the very best version of yourself. If you find that you are able to secure interviews but somehow don’t seem to turn them into an offer of employment, it is possible that you are making one of five very common mistakes.

1. Being Late

It is important to make sure that you give a good first impression. Being late is not a good way to achieve this. Lateness can often indicate that you do not value other people's time and aren’t particularly interested in the role or the company. It can also lead employers to conclude that you are not likely to be reliable if they were to employ you.

2. Lack of Research

Make sure that you are informed about the company you are applying to work for and the expectations of the role. Lack of insight into either of these things can lead to awkward or embarrassing situations during the interview.

3. Rambling

Keep your answers concise and to the point. Interviewers don’t want to hear your life story. Make sure that you answer the questions asked in a way that is informative and accurate without rambling or moving off-topic.

4. Not preparing questions to ask

Almost all interviews will conclude with the interviewer asking whether you have any questions. Make sure that you ask at least one or two. This will show that you have paid attention, have done your research, and have a genuine interest in the position.

5. Being overly negative about your previous or current employer

Remember, the interviewer has never met you before. They will have gained a very basic insight as to your abilities via your CV, but the only insight they will get into your personality will be through the interview. Being overly negative about employers can give an unsatisfactory impression of your personality. No matter how awful a previous employer has been, try not to talk in a wholly negative way.
