7 Questions to Ask at your Next Interview
Towards the end of an interview, you will generally be asked if you have any questions. For many of us, it’s tempting to say no. You may feel that the interviewer has covered everything you need to know, or it could be that your mind has gone blank, and you can’t think of anything.
However, it’s always a good idea to have a couple of questions prepared to ask. Interviewers like it when candidates ask questions; it shows that they have a genuine interest in the job or the company.
Below is a list of suggested questions to ask during your next interview. It isn’t necessary to use all of them, and you don’t need to memorise them word-for-word, but they can help to act as prompts.
1. What do you enjoy most about working here?
This is a useful question for building rapport and gaining insight into what the company could be like to work for.
2. What would you say are the biggest day-to-day responsibilities of this role?
By asking a question specific to the role you are applying for, you are showing the interviewer that you are taking your application seriously
3. What opportunities are there for career progression?
This indicates that you are thinking of your future with the company and plan to stay for the long term. It also shows that you are keen to build on your skills and abilities.
4. What skills and attributes would you say are the most important for people who work here?
Knowing exactly what a company is looking for can help you to identify your strengths and highlight them to recruiters.
5. Are there any other companies you would consider competitors? Why?
All companies have competition. It is important to know what this looks like. It can also help you to identify areas where your skills might be particularly useful.
6. How do you see this company/industry developing in the next 5 years?
This tells interviewers that you are interested in the future of the company, not just the here and now.
7. What would you say are the biggest challenges for someone taking on this role?
No job comes without challenges. Understanding what these challenges might look like can help you to think about how you would tackle them.
As well as preparing a few questions to ask towards the end of the interview, it is often a good idea to also ask about the interview process. This can provide you with some insight into future stages and can help you to anticipate the next steps.
