5 Reasons to Choose Temporary Employment
In times gone by, it used to be that people would join a company as soon as they finished school and then stay with that company until they eventually retired. People would grow through the same company, gradually moving their way through the ranks. However, times have changed and this is no longer the case.
More and more companies offer a range of temporary contracts alongside their full-time positions. This can be for a number of reasons such as needing workers to cover employees who are on maternity leave or to fill gaps when staff are sick. Alternatively, companies may hire temporary staff members in order to complete specific projects or for short-term tasks.
While it may seem that working in temporary employment isn’t a good thing due to the short-term nature of it, there are a number of advantages which should be considered.
1. Rapid skills building
When you change jobs relatively frequently, you will find that you are able to build skills quickly in a range of areas. This process will help you to discover things that you are particularly good at as well as enabling you to find the industries which appeal most to you.
2. Gain experience
More and more employers are wanting to hire candidates who have relevant experience. While this is understandable, gaining the required experience can be difficult. Temporary jobs can give you experience in your desired sector which will then make your application more appealing for employers offering permanent contracts.
3. Flexibility
When you work temporary jobs, you have control over large aspects of your career. You are able to work for as much or as little time as you want, choosing a variety of temporary contracts for as long as you need them. This makes it an ideal choice for people who want to work, but require flexibility around their home lives or other commitments. Temporary contracts are particularly useful for college and university students who want to gain experience in their summer break.
4. Potential for Progression
Sometimes, taking a temporary contract works as a way to get your foot in the door, so to speak. It isn’t unheard of for companies to offer temporary staff permanent roles showing an employer what you are capable of during the term of your contract, so keep this in mind when you apply for a temporary role within your desired sector.
5. Career Progression
In order to progress through your chosen career, you will often need to have experience or knowledge of different areas. Temporary employment can offer you this. By using temporary employment as a stepping stone towards your next promotion or job role, you will be showing that you can use your initiative in order to develop your skills and expertise.
Whether or not you choose to look for temporary work will be a decision which only you can make, but you should always make sure to consider whether a short-term contract may be beneficial for you in the long run.
